March for Life Events - January 2018

On Thursday, January 18, Catholic Charities Social Concerns and Advocacy staff Jessica Grabowski, Nicholas Haskell and Joseph Purello attended the Pro-Life Leadership Mass and Reception sponsored by the USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities.  The Mass and Reception, held at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America in Washington, D.C., gathered Pro-Life leaders from the nation's archdioceses and dioceses.  The Principal Celebrant and Homilist was His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston and President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

(Nicholas Haskell and Joseph Purello had the opportunity to meet Cardinal DiNardo briefly after the Pro-Life Leadership Mass and join him for a photo).

On the following day, the North Carolina Mass for Life was celebrated at Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.  The Mass is celebrated annually prior to the National March or Life to bring together for prayer and worship the thousands of pilgrims who travel from the Dioceses of Charlotte and Raleigh for the March for Life, which is held on or near the date of the anniversary of the January 22, 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decisions Roe . Wade and Doe v. Bolton.  At the end of the Mass, Catholic Charities Respect Life Program Director Jessica Grabowski addressed those present thanking them for their being witnesses for life and letting attendees know where to meet on the National Mall at 1:00 PM and where to obtain Diocese of Charlotte "All Life is Precious" stickers.   Visit the website of the Catholic News Herald (www.catholicnewsherald.com) for a detailed story on the NC Mass for Life, at which Very Rev. John Putnam, Pastor of St. Mark Church in Huntersville and Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Charlotte, was Principal Celebrant and Homilist.

Catholic Charities urges constant prayer for the protection of life.  Please pray (a prayer is provided below from www.catholic.org/prayers/), that all human life, from conception to natural death, will be protected and respected by law and the charitable and just actions of society.

Heavenly Father, the beauty and dignity of human life was the crowning of your creation. You further ennobled that life when your Son became one with us in his incarnation. Help us to realize the sacredness of human life and to respect it from the moment of conception until the last moment at death. Give us courage to speak with truth and love and with conviction in defence of life. Help us to extend the gentle hand of mercy and forgiveness to those who do not reverence your gift of life. To all, grant pardon for the times we have failed to be grateful for your precious gift of life or to respect it in others. We ask this in Jesus' Name.  Amen.
